David Ferrer took advantage of German Simon Greul's poor service to sweep to a 6-3 6-4 win in the second round of the South African Open in Johannesburg.

The Spanish world number 13 said afterwards that he was comfortable relying on his baseline game in the hard-court event but added: "It was difficult out there tonight because it was cold.

"And, of course, there is the altitude, so we make more mistakes than normal. But I played good, consistent tennis."

When world number 118 Greul managed his one break of service in the seventh game of the second set, he threw the advantage away with three double-faults to hand the initiative straight back.

Greul had eight double faults in the match.

Ferrer's third-seeded compatriot Marcel Granollers was upset by French qualifier Sebastien de Chaunac 7-5 7-6 in a first-round match.

Ferrer will meet former top-10 player Marcos Baghdatis in the third round after the Cypriot eighth seed beat South African wildcard Raven Klaasen in straight sets.
